We have withdrawn the name lists and translations previously published here. They mixed community identities, historical people, and invented English phrases without adequate sources. A respectful-use disclaimer did not make those attributions reliable.
The former Cherokee, Lakota, Navajo, Apache, and Iroquois labels did not establish the provenance of each entry. In particular, Pocahontas was incorrectly placed in community-labeled lists. The National Park Service account of Pocahontas places her history in Powhatan contexts, not Cherokee provenance. This historical reference is not a recommendation to reuse her name.
We are not replacing the withdrawn translations with new guesses. English nature phrases and Markov-generated syllables cannot establish a name in a community language. The generation modes are also suspended pending review.
Identify the particular nation and language relevant to your question. For Cherokee language learning, start with the Cherokee Nation Language Department. For identifying a Haudenosaunee nation rather than treating "Iroquois" as one language, consult the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. These are starting points for learning, not endorsements of this site or permission to use a name.
Each proposed entry needs a traceable source, language-specific spelling and meaning, and reviewed usage context. Historical people, ordinary vocabulary, and personal names must be distinguished. Community-informed review is still needed; none is claimed here. There is no announced reopening date.
